God of War: Ragnarök Receives M Rating Ahead of Release

The violence and some profanity warranted the mature rating
by Joe Wilcock on October 04, 2022

The God of War series is notorious for its violence and bloodshed, so it should come as no surprise that Ragnarök has been given a Mature rating by the ESRB. Every entry in the mainline series has received similar judgement, but this time it's not just the ultra-violence that has warranted the M. According to the ESRB, Ragnarök utilizes profanity, specifically "f**k" and "sh*t", an aspect the franchise seldom uses, if at all. The 2018 reboot included the words "f**k" and "a**hole", correlating with the recent shift in tone for the franchise, striving for a maturer tone. The rating summary for its "Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language" is as followed:

“This is an action-adventure game in which players help Kratos and his son on a dangerous quest. Players explore various realms and engage in frenetic hand-to-hand combat against human-like raiders and fantastical creatures (e.g., centaurs, trolls, dragons). Players use axes and chained blades to battle enemies, often resulting in large blood-splatter effects and dismemberment. Players can perform finishing attacks that depict close-up impalement via bladed and hand-held weapons; repeated axe strikes to a creature's neck results in decapitation. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” are heard in the game.”

- ESRB

Ragnarök will follow the insanely successful God of War (2016), the revival of a series that had long since lost its spark. Earning itself countless awards, critical praise and commercial success, it has laid the foundations for God of War Ragnarök to be the game of the generation. The ESRB rating summary only adds to the hype, teasing Kratos' adversaries and adversities he will face in the sequel. The world simply can not wait for the continuation of Kratos' story, fortunately, it's not too far off now.

God of War Ragnarök will release on November 9th, 2022 for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
